Tribute to the Founders of the Society for Hematopathology
During 2012-2013 the Society for Hematopathology has experienced the loss of its two founding members, Costan W. Berard, M.D (President 1982-1984) and Ronald F. Dorfman M.D. (President 1984-1986).
In addition to their many contributions to hematopathology in general, Drs. Berard and Dorfman saw the need during the latter part of 1970s to provide a forum for American hematopathologists and hematopathologists worldwide to exchange ideas and promote investigation, dissemination of knowledge, and consensus in the rapidly evolving field.
As a result, Drs. Berard and Dorfman organized the Society for Hematopathology in 1981 as a Companion Society of the United States and Canadian Division of the International Academy of Pathology (now the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology). The annual Scientific Symposia and workshops sponsored in collaboration with the European Association of Haematopathology are evidence of fulfillment of their goals and vision.
